Duende: A guide to the best music around (now with Lorca)

So, the indefinable Duende, the magic ingredient that elevates a sad dance to art or in the great Federico Garcia Lorca's words, the "mysterious power that all may feel but no philosophy may explain." On its face, Lorca was referring to the muse of the Flamenco dance, the surge of spirit that art depends on, which is much, much more than mere talent or style. But that isn't it. Not entirely. Lorca's Duende is in the artiste's fingers straining past the very force that animates her, that brings her in communion with God through the "five senses and the grace of the Duende." It is that chill in your spine you feel, like the poet Tracy K. Smith, when a lover or a situation begs of you to leave Tuesday instead of Monday. The departure is inevitable. Songs end. That is their tragedy. Duende is in those songs that you wish would hold you suspended in their grace just a minute longer.

Without further ado and no order, a selection of 15 songs I love simply for their duende. This spans many genres so I hope that at the end of at least one song, you will feel your blood burn like powdered glass.

The Angelic Process-We all die laughing (warning: contains both harsh white noise AND beautiful melodies)

Smoke Fairies-Living with Ghosts (folk/Southern gothic/blues)

Connie Francis-Siboney (Oldies/classics/covers)

16 Horsepower-Splinters (dark folk/spiritual/David Eugene Edwards/bluegrass)

Lullacry-The Autumn (dark rock)

La Ley w/ Ely Guerra (acoustic/Latin)

Negura Bunget-Tesarul de lumini (Black metal)..live..again WARNING: Contains harsh distortion+brilliance from 2:15 on

Caifanes-Quisiera ser alcohol (Rock en espanol) ..I dare you to find a Hispanic woman who does not love this

Ojos de Brujo-Corre Lola Corre (Flamenco/Spanish/hiphop)

Iron and Wine-He lays in the reins (folk/fusion/western)

Gorillaz-Tomorrow comes today (britpop/fusion/alternative)

Erik Satie-Gnossienes no.1 (classical/minimalist)

Cold-Bleed (acoustic/post-grunge/nu-metal)

Jars of Clay-Flood (Christian contemporary/rock)

Mad Season-Long gone day (grunge/roots)...Mad season features Layne Staley, the late singer for Alice in Chains

Matthew Good-99% of us is failure (acoustic/rock)

Thanks -- lots of good recommendations here. It'll take me a while to soak all this up -- love th e Satie, though, to begin with, so am looking forward to the rest.

The lullacry song I like a lot, but the black metal will take me more time. I'm just still left wondering though, what is Duende? Can you actually write an article about something that's, you admit at the start, indefinable?

We rate the music clubs we go to here in Madrid by their duende. Either they have it or not. Federico Garcia Lorca is one of my favorites.

Damn, 3 vids left and company showed up. /sigh. What a splendid hour I have just spent on your hubs. Smoke Fairies, Iron and Wine, and Erik Satie are incredible... the last brought tears to my eyes when it ended... just as you said in your introduction. So good. And I could listen to those two women in the Smoke Fairies vid for eons. Anyway, I have to run. Thanks for a delightful diversion this late morning. You have a fan.
